your day on the island

Head off bright and early crossing from Hythe to Southampton, before boarding the Red Jet to Cowes – powering you across the Solent in just 28 minutes!

You’ll arrive in the heart of the bustling town of Cowes, where you’ll find plenty of places to eat, drink and shop along the high-street and spectacular panoramic views across the waterfront.

Just a short walk from the Red Jet terminal, you’ll find a regular bus service to Newport Bus Station, connecting you with the rest of the Island. Board the number 1 and arrive in Newport in just 10 minutes.

Or, why not take a stroll through Cowes to East Cowes via the Floating Bridge, with bus links to Ryde and Newport available outside Waitrose in the town. You’ll also find Osborne, Queen Victoria’s beloved seaside palace, in East Cowes – it’s just a 5-minute bus ride aboard the number 4 or 5 to the impressive estate.

From Newport and Ryde Bus stations, you’ll find onward connections towards Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin, Ventnor, Yarmouth and the West Wight, where you’ll find an abundance of country walks, beautiful beaches, delicious places to dine and interesting places to visit.

There are also two open top bus routes to explore

The Downs Breezer is a circular route taking you on a whistle stop tour across the Islands rolling downs with breath-taking 360 views and stops at some of the Island’s best beaches at Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin, and popular attractions like the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Wildheart Animal Sanctuary and Brading Roman Villa. Explore miles of footpath at Culver Down, from the Duver at St Helens, Bembridge Windmill and from Brading over the downs. Find out more: https://www.islandbuses.info/days-out-bus

Probably the best bus ride in Britain, The Needles Breezer is a spectacular open top route exploring the West Wight, including the iconic Needles Landmark. The windy route up the cliff to the Needles Battery is something not to be missed, with great views of the Needles and out to see from the top. Along the route you can stop off in Freshwater, where you’ll find a pretty pebble beach, Farringford Estate, Dimbola Lodge and Fort Victoria just outside of Freshwater.

For the ultimate tour of the Island, hop aboard The Island Coaster, taking you on a whistlestop tour of the Isle of Wight along the coastline. Travel from Ryde to Sandown, Shanklin and onto Ventnor via Wroxall on the south of the Island, before taking the picturesque Military Road to the idyllic West Wight. This is the longest bus ride on the Isle of Wight, following the coast around the Island from East to West.

Dogs on leads are welcome aboard all Southern Vectis bus routes and travel for free. The lower floors on all buses are accessible, with space also for prams. Bikes are not permitted on buses. Please note there are stairs to the upper deck on open top tours.

You’ll find great recommendations for places to eat and drink across the Isle of Wight on our Food & Drink pages, as well as Things to Do along the way.

Don’t forget to pick up our Isle of Wight Guide on the way over too, to help you plan your day.
