Sunday 22nd September marks Car Free Day, a global initiative to reduce the amount of motor traffic on the roads and encourage people to get out and about without reliance on a car.
Car Free Day is a unique opportunity to test pilot life without use of a car to get from A to B, and to experience your local village, town or city without a build-up of traffic and pollution – perhaps even encouraging small changes to your daily routine, whether that’s reducing the use of your car by catching the bus to work once a week, walking into town instead of taking the car or getting back on your bike!
There are great public transport links to get you to each of our terminals, with the Quay Connect bus running between Southampton Central Train Station and Town Quay, also connecting with Bluestar buses in Southampton City Centre.
On the Island you’ll find Southern Vectis bus stops less than a five-minute walk from our terminals in Cowes and East Cowes, getting you direct to the ferry for mainland travel or connecting you with the rest of the Isle of Wight if you’ve just arrived.
Bikes are permitted on both the Red Funnel vehicle ferry and Hi-Speed Red Jet service, as are dogs, with a dedicated Pet Lounge onboard our vehicle ferry – making Car Free Day a great reason to get out and about on two wheels with friends, or to plan a day out with your beloved pooch.

The Car Free Day offer is purchasable online only for foot passenger travel on Sunday 22nd September, valid for use on the Hi-Speed Red Jet service between Southampton and West Cowes and the Red Funnel vehicle ferry service between Southampton and East Cowes.
